Well, it happened. My very first sprained ankle! They always seem so romantic in books and movies, and of course the most famous sprain is Marianne’s in Sense and Sensibility, when she meets the philandering Mr. Willoughby.
Well, this wasn’t romantic. One minute I was walking, the next minute my ankle was giving way and I was bouncing down to the ground. My ankle was turned underneath me and a burning, searing pain took my breath away, and made my eyes smart with tears. It was so painful, but I laughed my head off when it happened. I don’t know why I laughed, but it was the reaction that followed. I didn’t know how bad it was, so I lay in the path sprawled at an awkward angle for quite awhile before attempting to put weight on it. When I finally did get up, I realized it wasn’t too bad, but it did hurt. I was covered in dirt and there was debris from the forest floor clinging to me everywhere. Not very romantic. Luckily, I’ve already found my Mr. Darcy and have no one to impress.
This morning I’m actually doing pretty well, and the ankle doesn’t look so bad. I can put weight on it, but I have to be careful not to twist it too fast in any direction or “YOWZA, that hurts!” comes from my mouth.
I actually have some photos of me sprawled, but I can’t bring myself to post them, so you will just have to use your imagination.
I do have some lovely photos, though, of what happened earlier in the day that I think you will like. All photos © Fete et Fleur 2008
We then took a drive into the wine country and visited a favorite spot.
This store is like an old general store. It has an impressive array of merchandise, including some amazing antiques as well as some of the best gourmet lunch food in the area.

I love this old vintage stool.

This quill pen was absolutely gorgeous.

These journals were made from cotton.

Vineyard

Wine grapes. . . they're almost ready for harvesting.

There is something I do want to include about our walk in the forest. Something very curious happened. The woods in the surrounding area where we live are old. I mean, really old! They are quiet, majestic and beautiful. If you are silent enough, you can hear the whispering of the trees beneath their canopy. As I walked, I dreamt about the Ents in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. That was when I noticed this.
What do you think?
I'm so glad to see that some of you are enjoying the cookie recipe below!

I am so sorry about your owy ankle, but it looks as though with lemons you've made lemonade and a delicious batch at that. If you can find one, perhaps you might get a cane/seat! Darling pictures!!!
I adore your article in the new Artful Blogger. You are so cute telling that darling exchange story about your houses.
Zwee!!!!!!!
I don't have to imagine what you looked like sprawled on the path as I did the same thing myself in January and the picture is etched in my memory. I am so sorry you have to suffer through a sprain. Keep your foot up, up, up and rest it. Even though it may feel okay, you still need to give a chance to heal.
Your pictures are lovely and I think I may have to try your cookies. They look divine.
Sit back, prop you foot up and catch a few old movies on AMC. You'll feel much better. :)
My dear I can truly identify with your sprain... I do hope you get to feeling better ... I know that at times a sprain is worse than a broken bone but not sure I agree with that.... I agree with your friend... you do need to keep your ankle up and let yourself rest or it wont heal
You pictures are quite lovely... it looks like a fabulous place to get lost and enjoy a wonderful day..... I am hoping that once I am able to get up and around that I might take in some of the vineyards in Charlottesville... I understand they are wonderful
Get some rest

That is a freaky tree- do you think it might get up and walk?
I think there would be nothing sillier than an elegant woman spralled on the forest floor! I'm glad you are ok- sprains hurt like crazy! Worse than e break!
I'm so sorry about the ankle. Unfortunately, now that it's been sprained it will likely happen again. I have one bad one that suddenly does me in at the most inopportune times. I hope you have some of those lovely Pumpkin cookies left to sooth you while taking it easy for a bit. I love the tree! I wish we had shops like that around here too. What a lovely day, almost perfect. Take care.
Those grapes look like they're made of velvet! Sorry about your ankle. I'm always falling out in the garden over some root or something. But I've been pretty lucky. Thanks for the tour. Everything reminded me of times gone by.

At least it was just a sprain! Last time I fell I actually broke my ankle and was off my feet for over two months.
I love the quill and inks!
Get better soon! ::Jill
Oh dear Nancy, I do hope your ankle gets better soon..
I am so happy that your Mr. Darcy is there to help you mend..
I have had so many sprained ankle in my lifetime that I have lost count and now it’s my knee that I am always twisting about…

I know this feeling. I've fallen twice... I broke my foot on the first fall and my wrist on the second.
Your forest must be magical indeed!
What a gorgeous day! And you found such treasures!
I'm sorry it ended the way it did. Get better soon, ankle!
I love your Autumn header, and I can't wait to try out those cookies!
Oh, I do hope your ankle mends quickly! What a lovely tour! I think you were in a magical forest of talking trees, perhaps it was the whisper of the wood that startled you and caused the slip?
The quill and inks made me quiver with longing! I would have surely taken them home with me.
Blessing of healing dear friend.
Nancy! Perhaps the tripping is a message for you to slow down... I'm so sorry, and on your special weekend too! So I guess the gym is out of the question this week... LOL Lovely photos, I'm glad you were able to enjoy the day regardless. I miss you and look forward to seeing you soon!
Last message is from me, Ulla, not Mr. M. although he's sorry too! Can't change it on this computer...
I know how painful a sprained ankle can be, I am sorry that you have one. I loved your trip and your photographs are sensational. I felt like I was browsing right alongside, and the magic that tree could inspire is enchanting. Karen
Oh, "Ouch!" Been there, done that. You probably are already, but be sure to ice it down regularly and wrap it well. Once you sprain it once, it is easier to do it again, and again, and... (I know from experience :( ).
Your trip to wine country looks like it was lovely. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Kate
